Polaris Financial Tech jumps 34% in two days

Shares in Polaris Financial Technology surged 20 per cent to their highest since July 2011, adding to the 11.6 per cent gain on Tuesday, after the software services firm said its board had approved a split of the company into two businesses.

Polaris will create a new company called Intellect Design Arena that will house its global universal banking, risk and treasury management, global transaction banking, and insurance businesses.

Polaris will retain its services businesses.

Shareholders of Polaris will receive one share of Intellect for each share held while Intellect shareholders will also be offered a special option to exchange shares for 90-day non-convertible debt with a 7.75 per cent coupon.

"We believe that investment cycle for Product business is very different from that of services business, hence, spin-off as a separate entity could unlock the value for the investors," brokerage Prabhudas Lilladher said in a note.

"Moreover, we believe the current structure is simpler for the management, if they decide to exit completely (sell-out) from either of the business," the brokerage says.

District 11 race could transform Roanoke City Council

Two current council members are lining up to replace Del. Onzlee Ware, and there are other factors.

And you thought the election season ended Nov. 5.
But days after the last ballots were cast, Democrat Onzlee Ware announced he would resign before beginning his sixth term representing the House of Delegates 11th District in the Virginia General Assembly. He wants to spend more time with his ailing mother.
That decision set off a cascade of effects that could ultimately change the makeup of Roanoke City Council.
Within a week of Ware’s announcement, five Democrats had lined up for their party’s nomination to succeed Ware.
Two of the five, David Trinkle and Court Rosen, are current council members. Trinkle’s council seat is up for election in May, and he said last week he hasn’t decided on whether to seek a third term.
Depending on his decision and the outcome of the Dec. 7 primary to choose the candidate for delegate, there’s a possible scenario in which four council seats could be up for election with only two incumbents in the race.
If Rosen were to win the House of Delegates race, his council seat would come up for special election in May. Add to that the possibility that Trinkle might not run, and you have Councilmen Ray Ferris and Bill Bestpitch seeking re-election, and the seats of Trinkle and Rosen open.
If Rosen were to win, the council could appoint a replacement, but that appointment would last only until a new member is elected to serve out the remainder of the term.
If Trinkle were to win, his council seat would be open.
With five diverse candidates vying for a House of Delegates nomination decided by a firehouse primary after just a couple of weeks of campaigning, anything could happen — including the process providing a springboard for unsuccessful candidates to turn around and seek a seat on council.
If any of those Democrats do jump in the council race, they’ll provide the incumbents with an intraparty challenge they’d rather not have.
Ferris, who along with Bestpitch says he will seek another term, said he’s heard rumors that some of those seeking the Democratic nomination for Ware’s seat might also have an interest in being on the council.
“It will certainly be interesting to see how they justify deciding that Roanoke City Council is a good consolation prize,” he said.
“I think you’ve got to really weigh where you think you fit in,” said Trinkle.
Among those Democrats, only Keith Wheaton, a political neophyte, acknowledged interest in a run for council.
“It’s very possible. I’ve talked with a couple of people about that,” he said. He wants to hold office, and jumped at the House of Delegates seat because it was a rare opportunity to run in a compressed time frame, but admitted his run will likely serve mainly as a “stepping stone” for him.
Sam Rasoul admitted giving “a little bit of thought” to a council run, and said he’s felt some pressure from “good ol’ boys” to bow out of the House race and run for council.
“I would be honored to serve, but my heart now is in this delegate race,” he said.
Trish White-Boyd, the other Democrat in the House nomination battle, said the same.
“Nothing else is a priority right now,” she said. “I feel like my platform would be best served in the House of Delegates.”
If any of those three want to get in the mix for council, at least as Democrats, they won’t have much time. The deadline to declare their candidacy and submit petitions for party nomination to council is Dec. 9, just two days after the Democratic primary for the House seat.
Another Democrat commonly mentioned for council is neighborhood activist and Roanoke Community Garden Association Director Mark Powell, but Powell said last week he’s too focused on his work with his nonprofit to consider a council run.
Mark Lucas, the Republican businessman who ran against David Bowers for mayor in 2012, also said he’s not interested in a council seat.
The Republicans fielded no candidates for council in 2012.
Bestpitch said he likes to see candidates who have been involved in city affairs in some other way, such as serving on the school board or the planning commission, more than those who just have a background in politics.
“I think a lot of people fail to differentiate between political activism and actually governing in political office,” he said.
But candidates have to come from somewhere. And despite the surplus of them for the House seat, there could end up being a limited supply of them for the city council.

Capt’n Paul’s Seafood stays open, Hometown restaurant closes

Capt’n Paul’s Seafood store is staying open. Owner Andrew Skelton was mulling over whether or not to close the Salem store when its lease was up last month, but decided to keep the business going.
In an email, Skelton said he decided not to close because of all the  customers he’d  miss and he ” just wasn’t quite ready to call it quits.”
He said he was frustrated  the way things were going a few months ago. Even though the business was profitable, the price of seafood  continued to rise and the hours were long. Skelton thought seriously about selling the business or closing it down.
“I thought I needed a change but a lot of the jobs I found wasn’t worth giving up the last nine years of my life. So I cut some of my hours back and refocused on my business and we’ll see what happens,” he said Thursday.
Skelton has been with Capt’n Paul’s since the beginning. He worked at the first Capt’n Paul’s Seafood in Roanoke and managed the Salem store for the first three months it was open and then bought the business. It’s still open at its location on 827 West Main Street.
While the fresh seafood business remains alive and well, Hometown Family Restaurant on Brambleton Avenue in Roanoke County has closed.
Restaurant owner Jim Ahmed said there was an unexpected death in his family and he must move back to Pakistan.
“I’m very disappointed to sell, but family comes first,” he said in an email.
Hometown Family Restaurant opened in September 2012 and boasted home-style American  cuisine. Ahmed  is selling all the properties. The price is yet to be determined for the restaurant.

US remembers Kennedy 50 years after assassination | Us news

The US is marking 50 years since President John F Kennedy was killed by an assassin's bullet in Dallas, Texas.

The city, which has long struggled with the legacy of the murder, hosts a series of official events on Friday.

Kennedy has been ranked among the nation's most revered presidents, though he served less than three years.

He is commemorated for his youthful vigour, his leadership through the Cuban missile crisis, and his challenge to America to put a man on the Moon.

But he is also remembered for ordering one of the most disastrous episodes of the Cold War, the failed Bay of Pigs invasion of communist Cuba by a CIA-trained paramilitary force of Cuban exiles.

“Start Quote

The older generation who remember Kennedy the best perhaps look back through a golden haze”
Kennedy, a Democrat, was part of one of the most prominent US political dynasties of the 20th Century.

His father, Joseph, was a wealthy businessman who served in senior positions in the government of President Franklin Roosevelt, including as ambassador to Britain.

Two of his brothers later served as US senators and ran for president. One of them, Robert, was himself assassinated in 1968. Edward Kennedy, who died in 2009, was a champion of progressive causes including universal healthcare.

John Kennedy's daughter Caroline is now the US ambassador to Japan.

Among the official events in Dallas on Friday, the Dallas Symphony Orchestra will perform, Mayor Michael Rawlings will give an address, and bells will toll at the minute of Kennedy's death.

Those events and others conclude a week of tributes to the slain US leader.

On Wednesday, President Barack Obama laid a wreath at Kennedy's tomb at the national military cemetery in Arlington, Virginia. Mr Obama was joined by former President Bill Clinton, who as a youth met Kennedy.

Members of Kennedy's family stood by Mr Obama, Mr Clinton and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton as a bugler played Taps, the traditional US military mourning song.

Shots rang out
On 22 November 1963, Kennedy and his wife Jackie travelled to Dallas for early campaigning ahead of the following year's election.

A British nurse in the Dallas hospital when JFK was shot and others recall learning of his death Crowds of supporters lined the streets to catch a glimpse of the couple. As the presidential motorcade entered Dealey Plaza around 12:30 local time (18:30 GMT), Kennedy's convertible passed the Texas School Book Depository. Gunshots rang out across the plaza. Bullets struck the president in the head and neck. Half and hour later, Kennedy was pronounced.

Although Kennedy's murder has provided endless fodder for conspiracy theorists, official inquiries have determined Oswald alone was responsible for the assassination.

The events of that November plunged the nation into mourning, and many Americans still recall where they were when they heard the news.

'Youth, promise, possibility'

Texan Daniel Kendrick witnessed the shooting as a teenager at Dealey Plaza.

"I ran as fast as I could, I was afraid of getting hit. There were bullets coming down," he told the BBC.

Historian Robert Dallek said America had yet to recover from the assassination, in part because it was such a tremendous blow to the nation's self-esteem.

"The feeling is, this is not what we do in American politics," he told BBC North America Editor Mark Mardell. "This is not a banana republic. We don't have coups d'etat, we don't topple governments and kill our leaders."

Mr Dallek said Kennedy's popularity endured in part because Americans have been so disappointed in his successors.

"People want a better life in this country," he said. "They want to think their children are going to do better. And they associate this with Kennedy's youth, his promise, possibility."

Stay on PG medical admissions in Maharashtra quota till tomorrow

MUMBAI: The Bombay high court has stayed the declaration of the first selection list for postgraduate medical admissions in the state quota till Tuesday.

The enrolment process, which started earlier this month, has already been delayed by several months due to a Supreme Court battle between private medical colleges and the Medical Council of India (MCI)
over a single national entrance test. The selection list was to be released on June 20. Medical officers (MOs) in Maharashtra had moved the high court seeking an increase in the quota already available to them. The next hearing for the same is on June 25. Until then, the directorate of medical education and research (DMER), which conducts the PG medical admissions, will not be able to declare its first list in the 50% state quota.

Currently, MOs have around 60-70 seats reserved for them out of 600 PG seats. "Although medical officers have 25% of seats reserved, they do not opt for courses such as anatomy and microbiology. After eliminating these courses, they are left with 60-70 seats. However, they prefer seats in gynaecology, paediatrics and clinical practice. They have moved court seeking an increase in their quota," said DMER directorPravin Shingare. Meanwhile, a separate group of students-who formed the Association of Maharashtrian Foreign Medical Graduates (AMFMG)-are planning to move court on Monday since they have been denied eligibility in the state quota. They are candidates from the state who have completed their MBBS abroad.

After the completion of their course, the MCI permits such graduates to practise in the country after clearing the a screening test, Foreign Medical Graduates' Examination. The candidates also have to do a year's internship in MCI-approved hospitals, after which they get a permanent registration. "If our children are allowed to practise in the state, why cannot they be allowed a chance to be eligible in the state quota? After appearing for the NEET-PG, they also got a separate state rank and an all India rank. Despite getting a state merit rank, the state has denied admission to us as we did not complete the MBBS course from the state," said a parent. All these candidates from the AMFMG are residents of Maharashtra.

Shingare, however, said that admissions in the state quota are only open to those candidates who have completed their MBBS course from here.
